How much is the ferry?
The ferry is included in the island facilities fee, so there is no direct charge for guests and visitors.
How often does the ferry run?
The ferry is a 24-hour service. It runs daily to the following schedule:
7.00am – 12am midnight: Every 15 minutes on the quarter hour. (i.e. 7.00am, 7.15am, 7.30am, 7.45am, 8am etc.)
12am midnight – 7.00am: On demand, please phone the ferry directly. You will find the number on a sign both sides of the river.
How long does the ferry take to cross?
The ferry is a maximum 4 minute crossing depending on the tide.
Can I bring a car on the ferry?
The ferry can cater for both cars and foot passengers. Please contact Reception directly for buses, as some buses may have difficulty crossing depending on the tidal times.
Can I park on the Island?
Yes, there is free parking for cars on the island – in the main Castle guest carpark, the Golf Clubhouse carpark and outside each of the self-catering lodges.
I’m not staying on the Island, can I just go for a walk on the grounds?
We are a private resort and our facilities are reserved for Island guests such as residents of the Castle Hotel and Lodges, members and visitors of the golf course, and guests dining on the island.
Are dogs allowed on the Island?
The Island is home to a varied ecosystem with a large amount of wildlife such as deer, so we do not encourage dogs as they can pose a danger to our wildlife. However, we have a small number of lodges which are pet-friendly and in this case dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Please contact Reception prior to booking for more information.
What time is check-in and check-out?
The Castle check-in time is 3.00pm and check-out is 12.00pm.
For the self-catering lodges, check-in is at 4.00pm and check-out is at 11.00am.
What time is breakfast in the Castle?
Breakfast is included with Castle rooms and is served from to 7.30am to 10.30am daily.
Lodge guests are welcome to avail of breakfast in the Castle at an additional charge, subject to availability.
Do you have room service?
Room service is available for the Castle, please contact reception prior to arrival for more information.
I’m staying at the Castle, do I have to pre-book dinner?
Yes, all dining (except breakfast) must be pre-booked prior to arrival, even if you are a Castle guest. This is to avoid disappointment during busy periods.
Are children allowed at the Castle?
Yes children are allowed at the Castle and also to dine, however they must be strictly supervised at all times.
Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
We have an entrance where we can place a wheelchair ramp on request and bedrooms on the ground floor, however they may be difficult to navigate comfortably depending on wheelchair size. We try to accommodate all guests however given the historic nature of the Castle this is not always possible and we recommend our self-catering lodges which may be a more comfortable option for some guests.
Are the self-catering lodges wheelchair accessible?
We have a small number of lodges which are wheelchair accessible and feature no steps, a downstairs bedroom with wet room including grab rails at toilet, shower seat and rails. Please contact reception prior to booking to ensure availability.
Self-Catering Lodge Queries
I’m staying in the lodges, where do I check-in?
Check-in and check-out is at the main Castle hotel reception unless otherwise directed by staff prior to arrival.
I’m staying in the lodges, can I visit the Castle?
Guests of the lodges may visit the Castle, including for dining, once there are no private events (such as weddings) being held. You will be informed of this prior to arrival. If you are unsure if an event is taking place, please contact hotel Reception.
I’m staying in the lodges, can I have breakfast at the Castle?
Guests of the self-catering lodges may avail of breakfast in the Castle at an added cost, subject to availability. Please contact reception prior to booking.
I’m staying in the lodges, do I need to bring towels?
No, the lodges are fully equipped and towels are provided. Additional linen and towels are available if required, at an additional charge.
What is provided in the self-catering lodges?
The lodges are fully equipped, including fridge/freezer, kettle, washing machine & dryer, cooker, pots, pans, tableware, iron & ironing board, hairdryer, towels, TV, WiFi etc. We also provide a small starter kit including some teabags, coffee sachets and UHT milk. Please note, the starter kit will not be sufficient for the duration of your stay and we recommend bring your own tea/coffee/milk etc.
Is there a dress code for the Munster Room restaurant?
There is no formal dress code however we discourage very casual or sportswear.
Do you cater for vegans, or allergies?
We try to cater for all dietary requirements, please inform us when booking.
What time is dinner in the Munster Room Restaurant?
Dinner is served from 6pm to 9.30pm daily, and there is an early bird menu available Sunday to Thursday from 6pm to 7pm. Pre-booking for these is essential.
I’m not staying at the Castle, can I still visit the Munster Room Restaurant?
Yes, non-residents are very welcome to dine with us on the island for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. However, pre-booking is essential.
I want to hold a private dining event, is that available?
Yes, we can cater for private dining options for groups both in the Castle and in the function room of our Kings Channel Clubhouse. Please contact reception for more information.
Do you have Afternoon Tea?
Yes, we host Afternoon Tea daily in the Castle with a seasonally changing menu, prepared by onsite by our pastry team. Pre-booking is essential.
I am not staying on the Island, can I use the golf course?
Yes, we welcome all to our golf course. Please contact our Golf Pro-Shop prior to arrival to ensure availability. Pro-Shop 051 871 633.
Do I need a handicap to play on the golf course?
Do I have to be a GUI member to play on the golf course?
Is there a dress code for the golf course?
Yes, it is not permitted to wear items such as jeans, tracksuit bottoms, tank tops etc. We do have suitable golf clothing for sale at our Pro-Shop. For more information please contact our Pro-Shop.
Can I rent golf clubs and/or a golf buggy?
Yes, we have rental sets of golf clubs available. We have a limited number of golf buggies available for usage in the summer season only. Please advise our Golf Pro-Shop at time of booking to ensure availability.
Island Activities Queries
What kind of activities do you have on the island?
We have nature trails, golf course, driving range, tennis/basketball courts, playground, lawn croquet, free kids club on select dates during school holidays, free WiFi, TV in lodges and Castle rooms, island picnics, afternoon tea etc. We also have some extra activities like falconry and clay shooting.
I want to do the falconry experience; do I have to pre-book?
Yes, pre-booking is essential. Please contact reception or Hawk Eye Falconry prior to arrival.
Is the falconry suitable for children?
Falconry is suitable for children, however, children must be at least 7 years old to participate in the experience. Children under 7 are welcome to watch, but cannot participate in the experience itself.
Is the clay shooting suitable for groups?
Yes, the clay shooting experience is suitable for groups.
Is the clay shooting suitable for children?
Young children cannot take part in Clay Shooting for safety purposes. Children must be aged 16 or more to participate and must be kept under strict adult supervision at all times. For enquiries aged 12-16 years, we can contact the instructor but cannot guarantee that they will be permitted to shoot.
Do you do tours of the Castle or grounds?
We do not provide any tours, however we do have a detailed history booklet which you may avail of during your stay.
Do you have a swimming pool or spa facilities?
No, we do not have a swimming pool or spa facilities. However, we can recommend a nearby hotel if this is essential for you, please contact Reception for more information.
I want to do some shopping. Is it far from the Island to the city?
We are located just 10mins drive from Waterford City Centre, where you can find all major shops, restaurants and activities like museums, galleries, cinema, theatre etc. We can arrange a taxi for you also, please contact reception on 051 878 203 to book.
